Once every 5 to 7 years Lake Superior freezes and you can make the pilgrimage out about a mile across the frozen lake to see the Apostle Islands Ice Caves. We made the trek last Saturday, along with over 10,000 other people on that day alone! There were people there from as far as Asia and India… but don’t worry, most people are from Minnesota and Wisconsin which means they are REALLY NICE, they take turns and get out of the way when you want to take a photo. I believe this is something that everyone should do at least once in their lifetime. It is an amazing experience, it is spectacular and it is well worth every minute of it! Come take the journey with us…
Walking out onto the lake you feel as if you have entered another dimension. Pure white winter as far as you can see.
Then you begin the pilgrimage out across the lake. There are two ways to go… along the shore or out onto the lake. It is about a mile walk either way… but the lake route is really tough and once you get out there you will sink…sometimes as deep as a foot and people were referring to it as the “hell walk”.
As far as you look you see a straight line of people. It feels as if you are walking to the end of the Earth and you all have a unified purpose. There is something just amazing about this trek together.
Even the dogs loved it!
Sometimes it is nice to take a little rest.
And then when it seems like you will never get there… you make it! and you understand why you made that long walk in the first place because it is simply breathtaking!
There are trees that have defied all odds and have taken root and have grown on the side of cliffs…
The sandstone orange rock blends with the ice formations to provide an unbelievable masterpiece of nature for every one of your awakened senses.
Every single ice crystal is unique.
You can go inside the caves!
Many that you have to crawl into.
But it is so worth it when you get to see this!
Some you have to slide down from!
There are majestic caves that steal your heart…
And some that calm you to sleep.
Everywhere you look is something beautiful and new.
There are big huge caves…
And every once in awhile snowmobiles appear out of nowhere from the other side of the lake.
There are so many different formations that you cannot possibly see them all.
Some are really colorful!
Thousands of people and everyone is in awe.
…because of sites like this!
Some people are having a picnic.
While enjoying this view!
There are over 3 miles of caves to explore…
Then it is time to start the long trek back! This time via the path by the shore… which is MUCH easier, smooth and a quick 20 minute walk back to the beach.
While walking back you thank God that you got to witness this.
And begin your journey home.
